CEDAR CREST
This not for profit nursing home and assisted care facility needs volunteers to help in the following areas: playing games, wheel-chairing residents to the beauty shop, or chapel services; assisting with art, crafts or baking groups; helping with large group gatherings; visiting with residents; or speaking to residents about an area of expertise or a hobby. Volunteers must complete an application, attend an orientation, and pass a background check.
SALVATION ARMY
The Salvation Army conducts an annual bell ringing campaign to raise the funds necessary to offer its help programs throughout the year. Volunteers who wish to support this effort may ring bells in 2-hour shifts, beginning on November 15 and running through December 24, at Walgreen’s (on Prairie Ave), Woodman’s, WalMart, and Shopko. Groups can ring successive shifts in one location to cover part or all of a day (10 am – 8 pm); individuals can also sing, play musical instruments, or just ring. Contact David at the Voluntary Action Center to book a slot.
S. M. I. L. E. S.
Special Methods In Learning Equine Skills (SMILES) has scheduled classes and needs volunteers to staff them. Duties include working with the horses and students. No horse experience is necessary, since training is provided. Others could be a SMILES “Greeter”—working in the evening or Saturday morning helping with attendance, answering phones, giving tours and just being a friendly face for students and volunteers when they arrive. They are also looking for committee members for different fundraisers. The class schedule includes both morning and evening sessions. Greeters would work Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 4:15 – 6:30 pm on Tuesday, 4:15 – 7:30 pm on Thursday, and 9:15 – 11:30 am on Saturday.
ROCK VALLEY COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

With the possible exception of fund-raising projects, volunteers must be able to pass a state caregiver background check, be fingerprinted, and pass a federal criminal background investigation.
MERRILL COMMUNITY CENTER
If you like helping students with homework, assisting in group activities, arts and crafts, and helping with clean up, you are the volunteer Merrill Community Center wants. Two people are needed from 3 – 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Bilingual skills and a valid driver’s license are definite pluses. Merrill Center is also looking for a Kitchen Aide to prepare snacks for students and clean up the kitchen when done. The volunteer must be over the age of 18.
